Bunnies: sent to give us grey hairs

Sigh. Bella is unwell, please send your thoughts and prayers her way. I don't think it's very serious, but we're keeping a very very close eye on her as we have learned from sad experience how quickly buns can go down hill.

Last night she didn't want her dinner pellets, which was incredibly worrying: Bella loves her food. She was cowering in her house looking very unhappy and i could not tempt her out. On inspection of the litter tray we noticed no poop either (the benefit of the huge size difference between our two buns: very easy poop differentiation). We gave her a shot of pineapple juice and after an hour she really perked up and ate some pellets.

Panic over, I went to bed. This morning she was behaving normally, bouncy and ate some breakfast veggies... But not as much as usual. She's pooping, but not as much as normal. Today's been up and down: sometimes she is hopping round the garden like a kid and nibbling at readigrass, but she's turned down broccoli and sometimes returns to the house for a lie down...

So we're just monitoring v closely, and administering more pineapple juice later. Hoping it doesn't mean we need to see the vet tomorrow.

We'll let you know.

Buttons is happy and healthy, and going through a v scruffy moult!

  1. Bunnies do produce a lot of gray hairs when they don't behave normally. Hoping for the best and not a trip to the vet.

  4. Well, she is gray...;)

In all seriousness, we will be thinking lots of good thoughts for Bella to be feeling better soon. I would suggest a few more shots of pineapple juice may be helpful; it's possible that she's got a minor fur buildup inside, and hydration is a key factor in helping flush it out.

  5. Update: more pineapple juice has gone in and seems to be doing the trick. She actually got excited about dinner (like usual) and ate most of her pellets.

    Looking positive

  7. Hope Bella pulls out of it. I had an angora house bun and it was always a concern. Drinking water is important too. Take her off pellets - hay is the best. I always kept a vet saline bag and needles handy to give subcu's coz they always get sick when the vet is closed! From a bunny-mom

  9. Go Bella, Go. We also use the fresh pineapple juice routine, and we keep an anti-inflammatory called meta-cam on hand. It relieves pain and helps them relax, which we find good for digestive issues.

Glad for the good progress. Gray hairs? Yup - got some too!

  12. Another update!

Normality appears to have returned this morning. Bella jumped on her breakfast veggies like she was starving (her usual behaviour!), lots of normal poo in the litter tray. She's been running around like a crazy thing both in the garden and the house! Yippee, so nice to see her behaving normally again after the scare.

I checked this morning and i think i have only one or two mew grey hairs!

Thanks so much every one for your kind wishes and advice. I can always count on you guys!

  17. Update, please! Is Bella okay?
BTW, our local HRS introduced us, well, the bunnies, to Probios. It's a horse biscuit that aids in digestion. It is their favorite treat, like run around crazy, snatch it out of each other's mouth favorite. Of course, it is a horse biscuit, so we break each one into 6 little pieces and everybody gets a one a day.
